PRODUCTION SERVICES All stages of the work from manuscript to PDF are reviewed and checked by the Production Editor, who is responsible for making sure that all edits and corrections are implemented and that all of the components such as art preparation and interior design are completed on time. We establish a workflow that meets the customer’s needs in terms of schedule, budget, and final file requirements. Copyediting We have a large pool of experienced freelance copyeditors available to take on projects in a wide array of subject areas. Many have advanced degrees or particular areas of expertise, and all have experience following Chicago Manual of Style, the MLA Handbook, and other more specialized style guides. We are capable of editing either on paper or online, as requested by the customer, and the author can review the editing online, on a printout of the redlined Word file, or on paper. We have a generic tagging system in place that is XML-based and conforms to our own DTD, but we can adapt to other systems either by changing the entire workflow or translating at the end of the project. We can provide a sample edited chapter at the outset of the project to fine tune the level of editing. Proofreading While first-pass pages are being prepared in our composition department, they are rigorously checked by our in-house proofing department for completeness and adherence to specifications. After we are satisfied that the page layout is correct, we send the job to a freelance proofreader for word by word proofreading. This is done against the manuscript in cases where there is a paper version; for online edits a cold read and paragraph check are performed. The Production Editor merges all sets of corrections and does a check of the frontmatter and contents pages prior to releasing the pages for first-pass corrections. Indexing We arrange for general subject, author, title, and other indexes upon request. For authors who choose to do their own indexing, we can provide Word files with page breaks or PDF files to aid them in the process. Permissions and Fact Checking We have extensive experience in scholarly publishing and can review the manuscript in terms of permissions requirements and adherence to the publisher’s guidelines.
